Raise your hand if you've recently created a human!

Ha ha! All kidding aside! Congratulations! Whether this is your first child, your 5th child or your last child this is a massive change in the family dynamic and for some it's smooth and others a bit of a bumpy road. Whichever path you are traveling I am rooting for you! Even if you're not having newborn photos taken personally, maybe you can share some of these tips with a friend.

  1. When arriving for your newborn session plan on feeding your baby and changing their diaper. This allows for the photographer to start wrapping/dressing baby while you are finishing getting ready yourself. Also, don't be surprised if you have to feed and change baby mid session.
  2. If bringing young siblings and/or a dog it may be helpful to bring another set of hands such as GRANDMA or AUNT. This allows for family photos to be taken but also lets photos of JUST Mom and Dad with the new addition as well.
  3. Talk to your photographer about what colors may work better in their studio space. For me, I HIGHLY suggest my clients where earth tones such as OLIVE, CREAM, CAMEL, MAROON, MUSTARD, ETC. Photographers, like myself, provide a Client Closet for you and your children to utilize! To elaborate on wardrobe I love seeing (depending on the size of the family) 1-2 small patterns within the group. For babies I stick to neutral swaddles.
  4. Consider having your hair and makeup done by a professional. This may seem like a BOLD statement BUT how often do you have portraits taken? You want to look and feel your best!!! For my Clients (with advanced notice) I have a preferred HAMU artist who comes right to my studio - Cathy, owner of Roots Studio Salon in Lapeer, MI.
  5. TRUST your photographer! I can't imagine you just picked a name out of a hat?!!! You may have admired their work for a while or a friend recently referred you to their work. Whatever the case may be you, at some point, liked what you saw. Let them take care of you and I promise you will have everlasting photos.
